Midas Blenny

Midas Blenny for Sale – A Charismatic and Golden Blenny for Reef and Fish-Only Tanks

Few small fish in the reef hobby combine vibrant color, entertaining personality, and genuine ease of care quite like the Midas Blenny (Ecsenius midas). With its vivid golden yellow to orange body, expressive eyes, and characteristic perching and swimming behavior, this Indo-Pacific species is one of the most consistently popular and rewarding blennies available to marine aquarists across a wide range of experience levels. At Dr. Reef Quarantined Fish, every Midas Blenny is fully quarantined and confirmed eating before it ships to you.

A Blenny That Mimics the Anthias

One of the most fascinating behavioral traits of the Midas Blenny is its tendency to mimic Lyretail Anthias (Pseudanthias squamipinnis) in the wild. In areas where both species coexist on the reef, the Midas Blenny has been observed adopting the swimming style and schooling behavior of the anthias, moving through the water column in a manner atypical for a blenny and benefiting from the protection of the larger group. This mimicry is a remarkable example of behavioral adaptation and one that can occasionally be observed in aquariums where the Midas Blenny is housed alongside anthias species, adding an additional layer of behavioral interest to an already entertaining fish.

Appearance and Size

The Midas Blenny is a visually striking fish whose coloration can vary depending on its geographic origin and mood. The body is typically a vivid golden yellow to orange, with some individuals displaying blue highlights around the face and along the body that intensify during courtship and display behavior. The eyes are large and expressive, characteristic of the blenny family, and the overall impression is of a fish that radiates warmth and energy in the aquarium. Adults typically reach 4 to 5 inches in length, making this a compact and practical species well suited to a wide range of reef and fish-only systems.

Aquarium Requirements

The Midas Blenny is well suited to reef and fish-only aquariums of 30 gallons and above. It appreciates a system with plenty of live rock providing perching spots, small caves, and crevices where it can rest and survey its surroundings in the characteristic blenny style. Unlike many blennies that are strictly substrate-bound, the Midas Blenny spends considerable time in the open water column, particularly in systems where it feels secure and settled, giving it a more active and visible presence than many of its relatives. A secure lid is advisable, as blennies can occasionally find their way out of open aquariums. Water quality should be consistently maintained with stable parameters and low nitrate levels.

Feeding

The Midas Blenny is primarily a planktivore in the wild, feeding on zooplankton suspended in the water column, which distinguishes it from the many blenny species that graze predominantly on algae and benthic material. In captivity it accepts a variety of small frozen meaty foods readily once settled. Frozen mysis shrimp, copepods, and enriched brine shrimp are all excellent dietary staples. High-quality omnivore pellets of appropriate size are also accepted by most individuals. Offering small amounts multiple times per day suits the natural feeding style of this species and supports its vivid coloration and long-term health.

Temperament and Tank Compatibility

The Midas Blenny is generally peaceful toward most tank inhabitants and integrates well into community reef and fish-only systems. It may show territorial behavior toward other blennies or small fish of similar body shape that encroach on its chosen perching territory, but significant aggression toward unrelated species is uncommon in systems of adequate size. It is considered reef safe and poses no meaningful threat to corals or sessile invertebrates, making it a practical and low-risk addition to established reef systems. Its bold, confident character gives it the resilience to hold its own in a community of varied reef fish without becoming a source of persistent conflict.
