    • pH: 8.1-8.4
    • Very adaptable to typical reef parameters
  • Equipment Recommendations:
    • Standard filtration system
    • Protein skimmer
    • Moderate water circulation These maintain healthy conditions for this resilient species.

Diet & Feeding

Starry Blennies are primarily herbivorous with constant grazing behavior. Recommended foods include:

  • Staples: Herbivore pellets, spirulina flakes, algae wafers
  • Plant Matter: Nori seaweed, marine algae sheets, spirulina (essential)
  • Frozen Foods: Herbivore preparations with marine algae
  • Natural Grazing: Film algae, microalgae, diatoms, and some types of hair algae from rocks and glass
  • Feeding Frequency: Supplemental feeding once daily; grazes continuously throughout the day
  • Special Note: Requires constant access to algae; must supplement with prepared algae if natural growth is limited

Notes & Considerations

  • Highly effective algae control fish; excellent at managing film algae, microalgae, and diatoms.
  • Very hardy and adaptable; ideal for beginner marine aquarists.
  • A distinctive star-like spotted pattern makes it one of the most attractive blenny species.
  • Extremely personable and curious; often becomes very bold and interactive.
  • Will vigorously defend territory from other blennies and similar fish.
  • Only one per tank unless the aquarium is very large (75+ gallons).
  • Secure aquarium lid is essential; accomplished jumpers.
  • Generally peaceful toward all tankmates except other blennies or similarly shaped fish.
  • Spends most daylight hours actively grazing algae from all surfaces.
  • May perch on corals but does not harm them.
  • Can starve in overly clean tanks without sufficient algae; supplementation is critical.

I can’t say enough good things about my Starry Blenny and Dr. Reef. The fish arrived in great health, looking strong and active. It has settled into my tank quickly and is already moving around, chewing on algae and rock. It’s a beautiful fish! Dr. Reef’s customer service is outstanding.
