The Blue Stripe Pipefish, known scientifically as Doryrhamphus excisus, is a small, slender fish that reaches approximately three inches in length at maturity. Its body is deep red or orange in color, marked by a vivid blue horizontal stripe running from the snout to the tail, which is tipped with a distinctive flag-like marking of red and white that the fish fans and displays during social interactions and courtship behavior.

Pipefish are closely related to Seahorses and share several remarkable biological traits with them. Like Seahorses, male Pipefish carry and brood eggs in a specialized pouch until they hatch. They swim using the same rapid, fan-like movement of their dorsal fin rather than the body undulation typical of most fish.
