Blue Stripe Pipefish for Sale: Seahorse Relative Care Guide

The Blue Stripe Pipefish is a slender, graceful, and genuinely enchanting animal that brings a completely different kind of beauty to a marine aquarium. A close relative of Seahorses, Pipefish share many of the same fascinating characteristics that make the entire Syngnathidae family so beloved by dedicated marine hobbyists. At Dr. Reef’s Quarantined Fish, we provide properly conditioned Blue Stripe Pipefish that arrive healthy and eating, ready to thrive in a carefully prepared aquarium environment.
What Is the Blue Stripe Pipefish?
The Blue Stripe Pipefish, known scientifically as Doryrhamphus excisus, is a small, slender fish that reaches approximately three inches in length at maturity. Its body is deep red or orange in color, marked by a vivid blue horizontal stripe running from the snout to the tail, which is tipped with a distinctive flag-like marking of red and white that the fish fans and displays during social interactions and courtship behavior.
Pipefish are closely related to Seahorses and share several remarkable biological traits with them. Like Seahorses, male Pipefish carry and brood eggs in a specialized pouch until they hatch. They swim using the same rapid, fan-like movement of their dorsal fin rather than the body undulation typical of most fish. They are slow, deliberate animals that live at the pace of the reef rather than the frantic speed of open-water predators.
Blue Stripe Pipefish are unique among commonly available Pipefish species in that they are known to engage in cleaning behavior, picking parasites from fish in a manner similar to Cleaner Wrasses and Cleaner Shrimp. This behavior has been observed in both wild and captive settings and adds another layer of ecological interest to an already fascinating species.
Why Pipefish Require Specialized Care
Pipefish are not beginner fish. They share the same dietary challenges as Seahorses, requiring frequent feedings of small, live or frozen prey items that they can capture with their small, tube-like mouths. They cannot compete with faster, more aggressive fish at feeding time and will starve in a general community tank where food is consumed before it reaches them.
They also require very specific water quality conditions. Low nutrient levels, stable temperature, and gentle flow are essential for keeping Pipefish healthy long-term. Strong powerheads and turbulent flow can exhaust these delicate, slow-swimming animals quickly.
At Dr. Reef’s Quarantined Fish, every Blue Stripe Pipefish is carefully conditioned during quarantine to accept frozen copepods and frozen baby mysis shrimp, which are the most practical and nutritious foods for this species in captivity. Confirming that each Pipefish is eating prepared frozen foods before shipping is one of the most critical steps in the Dr. Reef process and one of the most important factors in your long-term success with this species.
Ideal Tank Setup for Blue Stripe Pipefish
Blue Stripe Pipefish do best in a dedicated species tank or a very carefully selected peaceful community. A tank of 20 to 30 gallons with gentle flow, abundant live rock, and a thriving copepod population in a connected refugium creates an ideal environment. Macroalgae like Chaeto and Caulerpa provide additional hiding places and natural grazing opportunities that keep Pipefish comfortable and engaged.
Tank mates should be strictly non-aggressive and very slow-moving. Other Pipefish, small Gobies, and peaceful Dragonets can work in a carefully managed system. Avoid any fish that is fast, aggressive at feeding time, or large enough to consider a Pipefish as a potential meal.
Feed frozen copepods and frozen baby mysis shrimp at least three times daily. A refugium producing live copepods in abundance is the single most beneficial addition to any tank housing Pipefish or Seahorses, providing a constant supply of natural food between scheduled feedings. With the right environment and the properly conditioned animals available from Dr. Reef’s Quarantined Fish, the Blue Stripe Pipefish is one of the most rewarding and magical fish you will ever have the privilege of keeping.
