Regal Angelfish for Sale – A Majestic and Colorful Angel for Large Marine Aquariums

Few angelfish in the marine hobby generate the same level of admiration and desire as the Regal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus). With its bold alternating bands of vivid orange and white edged in electric blue, striking dorsal fin patterning, and commanding presence in the water column, it is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful angelfish in the ocean. It is also a species with a well-earned reputation for difficulty, making the source and preparation of the fish at the point of purchase one of the most critical decisions an aquarist can make. At Dr. Reef Quarantined Fish, every Regal Angelfish is fully quarantined and confirmed eating before it ships to you.
A Fish of Extraordinary Beauty
The Regal Angelfish is native to the Indo-Pacific, ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa across to the central Pacific. Notably, specimens originating from the Red Sea and Indian Ocean are widely considered harder and more adaptable to captive feeding than those collected from the Pacific, and sourcing accordingly makes a meaningful difference to long-term success with this species. It inhabits rich coral reef environments, typically in areas with abundant sponge and tunicate growth that forms the core of its natural diet, and is usually found in association with complex reef structure that provides shelter and a reliable food source.
Appearance and Size
The Regal Angelfish is a fish of exceptional visual refinement. The body displays a series of bold alternating white and vivid orange bands running diagonally across the flanks, each edged in fine blue lines that add a layer of intricate detail to the overall pattern. The dorsal fin carries its own distinct banding of orange, blue, and black that is unlike the body pattern and adds further visual complexity to an already striking fish. Adults typically reach 10 inches in length, making this a substantial angelfish that commands genuine presence in a large, well-appointed marine system.
Aquarium Requirements
The Regal Angelfish requires a large, mature, and impeccably maintained marine system. A minimum of 180 gallons is recommended, with larger systems being strongly preferable for adult specimens. The aquarium should be well established with abundant live rock providing caves, overhangs, and sheltered areas that reflect the complex reef environments this species inhabits in the wild. Water quality must be maintained at the highest standard, with consistently low nitrate levels, stable salinity, and excellent biological and mechanical filtration. This species is sensitive to declining water parameters and does not adapt well to immature or inconsistently maintained systems. The Regal Angelfish is a fish that demands the full attention and discipline of an experienced marine aquarist.
Feeding
Feeding is the defining challenge of keeping the Regal Angelfish successfully. In the wild this species feeds primarily on sponges and tunicates, food sources that are difficult to replicate in captivity. Transitioning a Regal Angelfish onto prepared foods requires patience, persistence, and a varied approach. High-quality angelfish preparations containing sponge material, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched frozen foods, and marine algae represent the best available dietary options in captivity. Some specimens, particularly those of Pacific origin, can be extremely reluctant feeders that require weeks of careful coaxing before accepting prepared foods reliably. This feeding challenge is the primary reason that purchasing a specimen already eating in quarantine is not merely advisable but genuinely critical for success with this species.
Temperament and Tank Compatibility
The Regal Angelfish is generally peaceful toward most fish species and integrates into community reef systems without becoming a persistent source of aggression. It may show mild competition at feeding time and can be displaced by more assertive feeders, so tank mates should be chosen to avoid species that will dominate feeding interactions. Like most large angelfish it is not considered fully reef safe and may graze on certain soft corals, sponges, and sessile invertebrates. It performs best in a fish-only live rock system or a carefully managed reef where the coral selection takes its natural grazing behavior into account.
Why Buy from Dr. Reef
The Regal Angelfish is a species where the source of purchase quite literally determines the outcome. At Dr. Reef Quarantined Fish, every Regal Angelfish undergoes an extended quarantine and feeding program before being offered for sale. Each fish is treated prophylactically, monitored carefully for health and body condition, and trained onto a varied diet of prepared foods before it ships. We do not offer a Regal Angelfish for sale until it is eating reliably and visibly thriving in our care. That standard is what makes long-term success with this breathtaking species achievable.
