How to Acclimate Saltwater Fish: The Dr.Reef Advantage

Bringing new saltwater fish home is one of the most exciting moments in the reefkeeping hobby. However, proper acclimation is critical to ensuring your fish transition smoothly into their new environment and thrive for years to come. At Dr.Reef’s Quarantined Fish, we’ve refined an acclimation process based on years of experience and scientific understanding that protects your fish and sets them up for success from day one.
Why Acclimation Matters
When fish arrive at your door, they’ve been through a journey. Even with the most careful packaging and shipping practices, the transport water chemistry differs from your aquarium. Temperature, pH, and salinity variations can stress fish if not managed properly. That’s where proper acclimation becomes essential. It gives your new arrivals time to adjust gradually, minimizing shock and maximizing their chances of thriving.
The Dr.Reef Acclimation Method: Simple, Safe, and Effective
At Dr.Reef’s Quarantined Fish, we’ve developed an acclimation protocol that prioritizes fish health above all else. Here’s our recommended process that has proven successful for thousands of customers:
Step 1: Inspect Your Package Upon arrival, immediately inspect the box and bags for any damage. Check all bags to make sure fish arrived alive and healthy. This initial inspection ensures you can address any concerns promptly.
Step 2: Lights Off Turn off your aquarium lights before introducing any livestock. This reduces stress significantly, as fish feel more secure in dimmer conditions during the transition period.
Step 3: Temperature Acclimation Float all unopened bags in your tank or sump for 20 to 30 minutes. This equalizes the water temperature between the shipping bags and your aquarium, preventing temperature shock that can weaken fish immune systems.
Step 4: The Simple Release After temperature acclimation, cut open the bags and scoop out your fish, releasing them into your tank. You can also release all fish in a bucket along with the transport water, then scoop the fish out of the bucket and release them in your tank. Keep inverts separate, as fish water may contain ammonia reducer.
Understanding Low Salinity Shipments
Dr.Reef generally ships fish at a specific gravity of 1.023 to 1.026. However, some fragile fish species arrive at much lower salinity at 1.018 for their protection. If you receive fish shipped at low salinity, release all fish in a bucket and let them rest for 15 to 20 minutes. This allows ambient air to interact with the water, raising the pH slowly. After 15 to 20 minutes, the pH should be balanced. Then simply scoop them out and release them in your tank, keeping lights off. Do not worry about matching salinity.
Why We Don’t Recommend Drip Acclimation
You might be surprised to learn that Dr.Reef doesn’t recommend the traditional drip method or using airstones during acclimation. Here’s the science behind this important guideline: When fish are bagged for shipping, CO2 builds up in bags and causes ammonia to convert to ammonium due to low pH. Ammonium is not toxic. However, once a bag is opened and oxygen starts to interact with bag water, especially with use of airstone, pH increases rapidly and ammonium converts back to ammonia, which is toxic. This sudden ammonia spike can harm your fish more than the gradual acclimation helps them. Please follow the Dr.Reef acclimation method and do not use drip or airstone.
Special Considerations for Invertebrates
For inverts, Dr.Reef ships at a salinity of 1.025 to 1.026. Simply float the unopened bags in your tank or sump with lights off for 20 to 30 minutes, then cut the bags and net or scoop the inverts out and release them in the tank. Please do not mix inverts with fish transport water, as fish water contains medicines. Keep fish and inverts separate during acclimation.
Emergency Acclimation for Delayed Shipments
If your shipment was delayed, skip the standard acclimation process and simply release your fish in your tank right away, keeping lights off. Time is more critical than gradual acclimation in these rare circumstances.
The Dr.Reef Quarantine Advantage
What truly sets Dr.Reef’s fish apart is that your acclimation is just the final step in a comprehensive health process. Every fish from Dr.Reef has already undergone rigorous quarantine and treatment protocols. Our fish arrive at your door having completed a full quarantine process that includes treatment with Chloroquine Phosphate or Copper Power to eliminate external parasites, Prazipro and Metro treatments for internal parasites, careful observation in dedicated quarantine systems, and conditioning to accept prepared foods readily.
This means you’re receiving fish that are disease-free, parasite-free, eating well, and already acclimated to aquarium life. The simple acclimation process is all that’s needed because the hard work has already been done in our facility.
