Cherub Angelfish
Cherub Angelfish for Sale – A Tiny and Vibrant Dwarf Angel for Reef Aquariums

Few dwarf angelfish in the marine hobby offer the combination of vivid color, compact size, and genuine personality that the Cherub Angelfish (Centropyge argi) brings to a reef or fish-only system. With its deep royal blue body, bright orange face, and bold character packed into one of the smallest angelfish frames available, this Caribbean native is an excellent choice for aquarists who want the character and presence of an angelfish without the space demands of larger species. At Dr. Reef Quarantined Fish, every Cherub Angelfish is fully quarantined and confirmed eating before it ships to you.
A Small Fish With a Big Personality
The Cherub Angelfish is native to the western Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, where it inhabits coral reef environments, rocky outcroppings, and areas with abundant rubble and algae growth, typically at depths ranging from shallow reef flats down to moderate depths. In the wild it is a secretive and quick-moving fish that stays close to the shelter of the reef structure, darting between crevices and caves as it forages for algae and small invertebrates throughout the day. That bold, energetic character carries directly into the aquarium, where the Cherub Angelfish quickly establishes itself as one of the most active and personable inhabitants of any system it calls home.
Appearance and Size
The Cherub Angelfish is immediately striking for its vivid and cleanly defined coloration. The body is a deep, rich royal blue that covers the flanks and dorsal surface, while the face, chest, and area around the pectoral fins display a warm, bright orange that creates a sharp and attractive contrast against the blue. The eye is ringed in a fine circle of blue that adds a further point of detail to an already distinctive face. Adults typically reach only 2.5 to 3 inches in length, making this one of the smallest angelfish available in the hobby and a species well suited to nano and smaller reef systems where larger dwarf angels would be impractical.
Aquarium Requirements
The Cherub Angelfish is one of the most accessible angelfish in terms of space requirements. A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended, making it one of the few angelfish genuinely suited to smaller marine systems. The aquarium should provide plenty of live rock with caves, crevices, and sheltered areas where the fish can retreat and feel secure. It appreciates a system with natural grazing opportunities on established live rock, as grazing on algae and microfauna forms an important part of its daily activity and nutritional intake. Water quality should be consistently maintained with stable parameters and low nitrate levels, and a mature, well-established system gives this species the environment it needs to display its most confident and natural behavior.
Feeding
The Cherub Angelfish is an omnivore that grazes on algae, small invertebrates, and organic material in the wild. In captivity it adapts readily to a varied diet of prepared foods and is generally an enthusiastic and uncomplicated feeder once settled. High-quality dwarf angelfish preparations, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched frozen foods, and dried seaweed sheets all form a practical and nutritionally varied dietary foundation. Offering food multiple times per day supports the continuous grazing habit of this species and maintains its health and vibrant coloration over the long term.
Temperament and Tank Compatibility
The Cherub Angelfish is semi-aggressive and can show territorial behavior, particularly in smaller systems where space is limited. It may be assertive toward other small fish of similar size and body shape and can occasionally bully more timid species if given the opportunity. In systems of adequate size with plenty of structural complexity it generally behaves well and integrates into a community of confident, appropriately sized tank mates without becoming a persistent source of conflict. It is considered reef safe with caution, as some individuals may nip at soft corals, zoanthids, and certain fleshy large polyp stony corals. Individual behavior varies, and many aquarists keep this species in reef systems without incident, but some observation during the initial settling period is advisable.
Why Buy from Dr. Reef
At Dr. Reef Quarantined Fish, every Cherub Angelfish undergoes a full quarantine and observation period before being offered for sale. Each fish is treated prophylactically for common marine parasites, monitored carefully for health and appetite, and confirmed eating a varied diet of prepared foods before it ships. We do not offer a fish for sale until it is actively feeding and visibly thriving in our care. That preparation gives this characterful and beautifully colored little angel the strongest possible foundation in your system.
