Dogface Puffer for Sale: Personality, Diet, and Tank Size

If you are looking for a fish with the kind of personality that makes you feel like you actually have a pet, look no further than the Dogface Puffer. This remarkable fish is famous for its expressive face, intelligent behavior, and ability to recognize and interact with its owner in ways that most fish simply cannot. At Dr. Reef’s Quarantined Fish, our Dogface Puffers are fully quarantined and conditioned, giving you the healthiest possible start with one of the most entertaining fish in the saltwater hobby.
Why Everyone Falls in Love With the Dogface Puffer
The Dogface Puffer gets its name from its remarkably dog-like facial features. Its large, round eyes, fleshy lips, and expressive face genuinely look like a tiny underwater dog staring back at you through the glass. Many Dogface Puffer owners report that their fish swims to the front of the tank when they approach, follows their hand along the glass, and even seems to beg for food at mealtimes.
This level of interactivity is rare in the fish world and is a big reason why the Dogface Puffer has developed such a devoted fan base among saltwater hobbyists. If you want a fish that feels more like a companion than just a display animal, the Dogface Puffer is in a class of its own.
Personality and Behavior
Dogface Puffers are bold, curious, and surprisingly intelligent. They spend their time exploring every corner of the tank, investigating new objects, and watching activity outside the aquarium with genuine interest. They are not shy fish. Once comfortable in their environment, they will swim confidently throughout the tank and engage with their owner on a daily basis.
One behavior worth knowing about is their ability to puff up when stressed or threatened. The puffer inflates its body by taking in water, making itself appear much larger to potential predators. While this defense mechanism is fascinating to observe, it is stressful for the fish and should not be deliberately triggered. A well-cared-for Dogface Puffer in a proper setup will rarely feel the need to puff up at all.
Diet and Feeding
Dogface Puffers are carnivores with strong beaks designed for crushing hard-shelled prey. In the wild, they feed on crustaceans, mollusks, and other invertebrates. In the aquarium, they should be fed a varied diet that includes whole shrimp, clams on the half shell, squid, mussels, and other meaty seafood items. Feeding hard-shelled foods like whole krill and clams is important because it helps wear down their continuously growing beak teeth and keeps them in good dental health.
Feed your Dogface Puffer once or twice daily. They are enthusiastic eaters and will make their hunger very clear by swimming near the surface and following your hand at feeding time. Because Dr. Reef’s fish are trained onto prepared foods during quarantine, your Puffer will already be eating confidently when it arrives.
Tank Size and Setup
Dogface Puffers grow to around 12 to 13 inches in length as adults, so they need a large aquarium. A minimum tank size of 100 gallons is recommended, with 125 gallons or more being ideal for a fully grown adult. They need open swimming space and sturdy decorations because they are not delicate fish. They will rearrange lightweight items and may knock things over as they explore.
Dogface Puffers are not reef safe. They will eat shrimp, snails, crabs, and other invertebrates without hesitation. They are best kept in a fish-only with live rock setup alongside other large, hardy tank mates like Lionfish, large Groupers, and Triggers of similar size.
When you are ready to add the most personable fish in the ocean to your home aquarium, trust Dr. Reef’s Quarantined Fish for a healthy, eating, and thriving Dogface Puffer that is ready to become your new favorite tank resident.
